Thrift Your Way to a Festive Ramadan & Eid

Every year, when Ramadan gets closer, we feel it before we see it.

It’s the month of intentional reset and a time to slow down, reflect and try to be better than we were yesterday. We think more about our prayers, our habits, our generosity and naturally that mindset finds its way into our homes too.

Ramadan isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things consistently, with meaning.

Around this time, people start coming into Zikkies looking for something that gives their home that Ramadan feel. And then they begin to notice what’s available- Hand threaded framed Arabic calligraphy, not printed, not mass-produced. Old photographs of Makkah and Madinah carrying history and story within them. Unique homewares, vintage trays, pieces that feel like they’ve already lived a life before arriving on our shelves.

Almost every week we hear the same question:

“Are these all donated?”

And yes. They are.

That’s the beauty of thrifting. There is only one of everything. When you find something you love, that’s it. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. You’re not buying what everyone else has, you’re choosing something one of a kind and something that feels personal.

Most of these special pieces are first displayed in our Ramadan windows. Each year, the windows slowly come together with care and intention, designed to capture the warmth and familiarity we associate with the month.

One customer recently said,

“Compliments to the person who did the display…
I felt like I was transported to a souk or bazaar.”

Over time, the windows have become something people genuinely look forward to. A little like the Myer windows (if we may say so). This year, people were even waiting at the door an hour before opening just to make sure they didn’t miss out on the one piece they had their eye on.

Because once it leaves, it doesn’t come back.

There’s something that just makes sense about thrifting during Ramadan. The month teaches us to be mindful, not wasteful and to think about how we use what we have. Choosing secondhand means giving beautiful items another life instead of sending them to landfill. It’s sustainability without sacrificing beauty or meaning.

It’s about circulation, not consumption.

As Eid approaches, that same idea continues. You don’t need brand new everything to make your home feel festive. A unique framed artwork, a special tray for sweets or a statement piece can feel far more meaningful than something bought in bulk.

And if you’re clearing space in your own home this Ramadan, consider donating something beautiful so it can find its next place. The framed art on your wall or the homewares in your cupboard could become part of someone else’s iftar table or Eid morning.

Giving, finding, passing it on. That’s the cycle we love about Zikkies.

So this Ramadan and Eid, thrift your way into something meaningful.

Because at Zikkies, there’s only one. And when it’s yours, it’s truly yours.
